History

THE ORIGIN OF Pimpin’ Pi Sigma Chapter parallels almost exactly the history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. itself. During the 1984-85 school year at Aurora College, a predominately white institution located in Aurora IL., there were several young black men enrolled under the various undergraduate degrees. While currently members or active in various social or literary clubs, these young men were desirous of creating a more stronger and fraternal bond. Seeking the guidance and advice of a black faculty administrator, these young men contacted and actively seeked out Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. During this period the faculty administrator was also seeking membership, but later abandoned the eleven. He later went on to join another fraternal order.

Now led by the drive and determination of DeAndre Redd, the young men then turned to two Graduate Chapter brothers from Mu Mu Lambda Chapter based in nearby Glen Ellyn. These two Graduate brothers were Bro. Rev. Jesse Hawkins and Bro. Fred Miller. Three undergraduate brothers from Eta Eta Chapter, seated at Western University, were recruited to begin pledging these young men. Two of these undergraduates from Eta Eta were Bro. Archie Hubbard and Bro. Herman Winston. When they began there were eleven young men interested, after the first night and the initiation into the Sphinx Club, there were only 9. During the course of the next 10 weeks only seven truly inspired, dedicated, and strong brothers were tenacious enough to persevere. These men became the charter members of Pi Sigma Chapter and are known as U.S.S. Perseverance These new members were initiated and made on May 25, 1985 and on Aug. 10, 1985 they received their charter allowing them to establish PI SIGMA Chapter at Aurora College.

PI SIGMA is the 548th undergraduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Among these new charter members there was a division based on the residency and ideology. Brothers living in one dormitory natural grew closer to members living in the same dormitory, and members also gravitated toward other members who shared the same or similar ideology. For several months after there initiation there was a PERIOD OF CONSOLIDATION. From the original seven, the membership of Pi Sigma Chapter began to steadily grow. Under the guidance of the charted members, the next Guardians of the Sphinx were made. These men were known as S.S. Espionage S.S. Mirage. Initiating S.S. Mirage, which included the paternal brothers Tim and Reuben May. Proved to be a key highlight in Pi Sigma Chapter history. Through the dynamic and charismatic personalities of these two brothers, the phrase PIMPIN’ PADDLIN’ PI SIGMA was coined and spread throughout the State of Illinois.

The next lines made were S.S. Word and S.S. Minutemade. S.S. Minutemade sank and only one survivor was found. With almost 15 members at Aurora College, the chapter learned of several young men interested in joining the fraternity, who were enrolled in nearby North Central College and Illinois Benedictine College. The initiation of these 11 men known as S.S. S.U.B.Z.E.R.O proved to be the FIRST STEPS IN EXPANSION of Pimpin’ Pi Sigma. Pi Sigma was now a cluster chapter which encompassed 3 colleges. The chapter continued to establish a strong presence on all 3 campuses and the initaion of S.S. 2xD.O.P.E; S.S. T.A.K.E. TWO; S.S. F.RE.E.Z.E. and S.S. D.E.A.T.H.W.I.S.H. made Pi Sigma a well established entity on ALL 3 campuses. The next line proved to unique in that S.S. L.O.N.E.S.T.A.R. was the first line in Pi Sigma history with only 1 initiate. The next two lines S.S. I.C.E.C.O.L.D. and S.S. I.C.E.B.R.E.A.K.E.R. also have the distinction of having only 1 initiate. The most recent line has been S.S. S.O.S.
